Hollywood Beach Golf Club | Hollywood, Florida
The City of Hollywood, Florida selected Richard Mandell Golf Architecture to re-design its layout just blocks from downtown Hollywood. Mythology has surrounded the 18-hole course since its early 1920’s inception as it has erroneously been credited to Donald Ross in the past. The possibility exists that an unattributed 1923 plan may have been created by Willie Park, Jr., who had a professional relationship with the original developer at the time. Nonetheless, Richard is utilizing the 1923 concept as inspiration for his re-design. As part of the new layout, existing lakes will be expanded to raise the flood-prone eastern half of the property, providing much-needed topographical character to the course as well. Greens raised above grade are all accessible from the ground yet will require precision from the air. A true City course, HBGC is surrounded by residential streets on all four sides, making it a crucial element of green space for Hollywood.
Darlington Country Club | Darlington, South Carolina
Originally built in 1926, Darlington Country Club is an eighteen-hole layout located in a sandy stretch of South Carolina an hour west of Myrtle Beach and ninety minutes south of Pinehurst. Richard Mandell Golf Architecture is currently working on a variety of projects, transforming this traditional layout into one that is rooted in the sandy soils the course sits on. In addition to a long-term plan to convert many of the rough areas to native sand, Richard is also focusing on the area directly behind the clubhouse. The primary feature is a 30,000 square-foot practice green which is connected to the green for a lengthened eighteenth hole (from 495 to 572 yards). A pair of cross-bunkers challenge the approach, as does a third bunker, cut into the slope of the new first tee.

Oconomowoc Golf Club | Oconomowoc, Wisconsin
RMGA was recently honored with its first project in the Badger State. Oconomowoc Golf Club in Waukesha County, Wisconsin will be Richard Mandell’s eleventh Donald Ross project. Initial plans call for the RBP process to be completed by fall of 2020.
Bobby Jones Golf Club | Sarasota, Florida
Bobby Jones Golf Club in Sarasota, Florida, is a 45-hole facility featuring eighteen holes designed by Donald Ross. Richard Mandell Golf Architecture has been brought in to restore the original eighteen Ross holes, redesign the additional eighteen, and add a new practice facility that features a 20,000 square foot putting green, new driving range, and a nine-hole adjustable par-three course. The result will be a golf facility with improved playability and a smaller impact on the environment.

Beechmont Country Club | Cleveland, Ohio
Beechmont Country Club is an original Stanley Thompson design located in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio. With Stanley Thompson designed courses in the United States being few and far between, Richard Mandell Golf Architecture’s ongoing tree management and tee and bunker restoration project is furthering Beechmont’s standing as a truly unique and special place.
Lake Forest Country Club | Hudson, Ohio
Lake Forest Country Club in Hudson, Ohio, turned to Richard Mandell Golf Architecture to help bring the club into the future while also honoring its past. During Richard’s research of Lake Forest Country Club, he discovered that the design had been mistakenly attributed to Herbert Strong, rather than Tom Bendelow who actually designed the course. Richard Mandell Golf Architecture is now leading the club through a phased Tom Bendelow restoration that includes removing over one thousand trees, widening fairways, and bringing back the chocolate drop style bunkers to the Bendelow layout.
Country Club of Asheville | Asheville, North Carolina
2017 Golf Inc. Private Club Renovation of the Year Award Honorable Mention
The Country Club of Asheville in Asheville, North Carolina, had gone through a series of economic challenges since its inception in 1928. McConnell Golf tasked Richard Mandell Golf Architecture with restoring the original Donald Ross green complexes and sand bunkers based on the only information available, a 1951 aerial photograph. RMGA also instituted a tree management plan that opened up incredible views of downtown Asheville and the surrounding mountains.
Bacon Park Golf Course | Savannah, Georgia
2016 - GolfInc. Municipal Renovation of the Year Award and Best In Show
Bacon Park Golf Course in Savannah, Georgia, an original Donald Ross design, hired Richard Mandell Golf Architecture to restore the course back to what was originally intended. Using Ross construction drawings and historic aerial photography, RMGA was able to replacate the intricate details Ross planned that had faded over time. In addition to the eighteen hole Ross course, Richard Mandell Golf Architecture designed the nine hole, bunkerless short course that features fun, quirky and undulating greens.
Myers Park Country Club | Charlotte, North Carolina
2018 Golf Inc. Private Club Renovation of the Year Award Honorable Mention
Myers Park Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, is one of Donald Ross’ more prominent designs. The club asked Richard Mandell Golf Architecture to restore the flashed-sand bunkers that Ross had envisoned for the course. RMGA increased the strategic interest and playability of the course through select tree removal and removal of historically inaccurate golf course features as well. Most recently, two greens and the practice facility have been completely re-built.
Keller Golf Course | St. Paul, Minnesota

Keller Golf Course has a storied history as the host of the 1932 and 1954 PGA Championships, 1949 Western Open, the PGA Tour's St. Paul Open, and the LPGA's Patty Berg Classic. Ramsey Count, Minnesota hired Richard Mandell Golf Architecture to bring the golf course back to the quality that made it suitable for the games best players yet fun for the current and future golfing base.
Army Navy Country Club (Fairfax) | Washington, D.C.
Army Navy Country Club is a 54-hole club in both Arlington and Fairfax, Virginia. The club turned to Richard Mandell Golf Architecture to create a cohesive Renovation Business Plan that streamline dgolf course improvement projects at both sites. RMGA oversaw a renovation to make playing conditions more consistent, highlight the unique land features and create a visually spectacular design with a nod also to its Robert Trent Jones roots.

2011 Builders Excellence Legacy Award: Renovation of the Year
At Army Navy Country Club’s Arlington location, Richard Mandell Golf Architecture was tasked with taking the 27-hole facility to the next level in its competitive marketplace. The award-winning renovation of the Arlington courses focused on restoring the character of the property back to its golden age roots and to provide a serene getaway for golfers in the metro-DC area.
Highland Country Club | Fayetteville, North Carolina
Highland Country Club in Fayetteville, North Carolina, hired Richard Mandell Golf Architecture to carry out a Renovation Business Plan and restore the course to the original design intent of Donald Ross. RMGA carried out exhaustive research utilizing Ross’ original construction drawings and 1951 aerial photography to provide a guide to Highland Country Club that would bring back the true Ross feel.
Orangeburg Country Club | Orangeburg, South Carolina
2005-2015 Most Improved Course in South Carolina, South Carolina Golf Raters Panel
New ownership of the Orangeburg Country Club in Orangeburg, South Carolina, undertook an extensive renovation specifically to update the golf course's infrastructure and to re-capture its standing as one of the top golf courses in the state. The effects of insufficient annual budgets each year required complete renovation of the sand bunkers as well as the tee complexes. The new ownership expected the golf course to be upgraded to a higher standard in design, conditioning, and service in a very short time frame. Returning the "Wow" factor to the golf course and restoration of the original Ellis Maples design features were primary goals of the project as well.
Raleigh Country Club | Raleigh, North Carolina
Raleigh Country Club in Raleigh, North Carolina, hired to Richard Mandell Golf Architecture to oversee a sand bunker, tee and cart path repositioning project that brought back the Ross design goals. RMGA channeled Ross by studying his original routing and early 1950s aerials to restore original features. RMGA subsequently adjusted the course to fit modern distances and improve the members’ playing experience.
Erie Golf Course | Erie, Pennsylvania
With an existing course designed by A.W. Tillinghast, the City of Erie, Pennsylvania, looked to Richard Mandell Golf Architecture to renovate their eighteen hole layout which included the addition of five new holes. RMGA created a course that flowed together and is more enjoyable for every golfer.
Monroe Country Club | Monroe, North Carolina
Monroe Country Club in Monroe, North Carolina, hired Richard Mandell Golf Architecture to bring the course into the 21st century while preserving as much of the original Donald Ross back nine design as possible. RMGA created new bunkers that looked like Ross originals with bulging grass faces and a low profile look. RMGA also moved bunkers to reintroduce strategy and decisions to the golfers.
