Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club | St. Petersburg, Florida

Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club in St. Petersburg, Florida, was built on a man-made island in the 1970s.  Seeking a long range plan, the club brought in Richard Mandell Golf Architecture to provide strategic direction that would improve the quality of the course and playing conditions for its members.  RMGA has helped Isla Del Sol undertake a three-phase renovation of multiple tee complexes and all sand bunkers.  RMGA shaper Brian Ross is assisting the club in the construction process.

The historic Tanglewood Park Championship Course in Clemmons, North Carolina, played host to the 1974 PGA Championship where Lee Trevino hoisted the Wannamaker Trophy by narrowly edging Jack Nicklaus and Sam Snead.  The course has not been updated since, however, and Richard Mandell was brought in to oversee a bunker restoration that brought back Robert Trent Jones’ original design intentions, collaborating with the office of Robert Trent Jones II.

2009 Golf Inc. Private Course Renovation of the Year Runner-Up

RMGA modified the putting greens at Water's Edge to provide more manageable slopes of 2% - 3.5% (maximum) while still preserving the original Loving character of the putting surfaces.  The creation of four to five distinct cupping areas tied together with subtle ridges was the main goal in greens renovations.  Foreign design features such as distinct tiers or plateau greens were avoided.  The general design philosophy of "low green and high surrounds" defined the greens complexes as originally intended.

Country Club of North Carolina Practice Facility | Pinehurst, North Carolina

The Country Club of North Carolina hired Richard Mandell Golf Architecture to renovate and expand the club's practice facility.  RMGA added a second practice tee and designed practice putting and chipping greens that emulated the unique styles of those on the Cardinal and Dogwood courses of CCNC.  As host to the USGA’s U.S. Girls’ Junior in 2010, the resulting practice facility provides a place for some of the best players in the world to fine tune their games.
